Laundry Room Makeover with Sharon Laakkonen

This transformation is stunning! Sharon took her boring laundry room and created a fresh and inviting space with the help of our [re]design collection. Let’s take a look at what she did…

Here is a before pic. I put a fresh coat of paint on the walls and added new flooring giving her a blank slate to work with. Most would stop right here and call it done, but she wanted to add more character to the room….

PREP: First I washed the cabinets to remove all grease, removed the hardware, and let everything dry. PLAN: I applied one Rose Celebration (635480) transfer between the two sets of cabinets. I laid out the transfer pieces on the floor and started cutting them apart.

I knew I wanted a floral collage on each set of cabinets, with more design in the middle, and a few scrolls and text at the top and bottom. I laid everything out on the floor to get a general idea, keeping the cabinet measurements in mind, then started applying the transfer to the right set of cabinets.

It was totally cool for some pieces to overlap as I worked my way down the cabinet-they looked very natural that way. And I added text in here and there to fill in gaps. TIP: to keep the cabinet grease-free I used a scrap piece of transfer backing to rest my hand on while working.

Since the cabinets are laminate they are slicker/glossier than most chalk-painted pieces. I just rubbed both directions very thoroughly, and worked in small sections to get great results when pulling that top sheet off!

Once I hit the middle of the cabinet I started reducing the width of the design.

Once the main pieces were applied I filled in with little pieces of text.

REPEAT for left side with rest of transfer pieces!

FINISH: Seal cabinets with a clear wax. (I used two coats of Anne Sloan) and add new glass knobs/handles!

For the final touch, add fun and fresh hardware to the cabinets to match the transfer. These handles have turquoise glass medallions on the ends with a silver metallic finish. It’s always fun to add some bling…

Now, for the Laundry Sign portion of the makeover: I started with a pre-finished board and had Lowes cut it into three even lengths (about 33-34" long each), which I glued together to create the sign.

When dry I added the [re]design transfer-Laundry (633219) (with a little help from my kitties! Kitty help optional. Warning-may be distracted by cuteness)

It looked a bit plain on the bottom, so I added a [re]design screen print design (Delicate Fleur Scroll) with Chalk Paste in Iron Gate! Supplies for this portion: 632694 [re]design Silk Screen Stencil (Delicate Fleur Scroll) 635312 Chalk Paste® in Iron Gate 636982-[re]design Spread Pals

The screen print gives gorgeous, perfectly detailed design. And it was so easy to use. I taped it in place so I wouldn't go outside the design with the paste, but the screen print is sticky, so it will not move.

Finally I added three glass knobs to hang lost socks on! (I did get help drilling those holes!) ~Sharon
