re·design Room Makeover with Lori Fornero

Hello re·designers! Today we are kicking off our room makeover feature with our contest winners from January. We randomly selected 5 people to take on the challenge of making over a room using the re·design with prima® DIY collection. This is our first feature and we want to introduce to you, Lori Fornero. She did an amazing job with her room and completely transformed it into a warm, cozy environment that she and her family can relax in. Let’s get to know Lori and see what she did…

Hello,

My name is Lori Fornero! I’m a mother to two beautiful daughters and a grandmother to five amazing granddaughters. Together, we cook with love, laugh, be silly and create together! My previous profession was in Corporate Cemetery sales, but after an accident years ago, my focus had changed. During the healing of a traumatic brain injury, I found I needed to create more than sell. My journey started with one chair that I upholstered, painted and it sold quickly! I am now a furniture designer and named my business Refurbished Treasures. My boyfriend of twenty years luckily helps me find furniture, picks it up and does the repairs. Then I design and give them new life. Recently, I started selling at a local boutique in my hometown named the Urban Soak Shoppe and I couldn’t be happier. I love Prima and the variety of creative tools they offer!

After winning the makeover contest, she set out to work on her living room that needed some love. The timing for this was perfect! Let’s take a look at the before…

The walls needed fresh paint and she needed some fun furniture to add to the room to make it cozy and inviting. The room had good bones with the gorgeous moulding, great lighting and wood floors.

Here is a glimpse of what the entry looked like before. It was tiled and not very exciting to look at. So Lori decided to give it some personality to welcome her guests when they enter her home.

Isn’t it gorgeous? It looks newly tiled and fresh. Her door was painted black to tie it all in.

The stencil she used is called Isabella (635916). It’s one of our Paver Stencils but as you can see-it has other uses. It measures 12 x 12 inches. And we have other stencils in different patterns too , so you could mix and match if you wanted.

Lori painted the floor with Folk Art Chalk decor paint in black. Then she used Waverly chalk style paint in white with the stencil.

Once the stenciling was finished, she sealed it with Minwax Polycrylic in satin. She said it is holding up beautifully with all the traffic she gets!

Next for the entry way, she gave this rustic wall decor shelf a bit of personality by adding knobs and using the Knob Decor Transfers on them-aren’t they sweet? You can use the knobs to hang coats or bags…love this idea!

Lori decided to go bold on her accent wall, using a satin black. It’s dramatic and warm—and works in this room since there is so much natural light. I love that she went for such a strong color choice! And her decor works perfectly with the color scheme and wood floors.

She used our Textile Curtain to cover a doorway for privacy (great idea if you don’t have a door to all rooms) and her guests coming in don’t have to see into another room if you don’t want them to.. She used the Distressed Lace 3D Stencil on the top of the curtain in black—it’s perfect!

This is a genius upcycle idea to create wall decor on a budget. Use old discarded windows and add some fun designs using the Decor Transfers™. Get a chippy effect by adding paints, then scraping them off to give them a vintage look. Use colors that match the color scheme in your room.

This is called Delicate Fleur Scroll. These stencils allow you to achieve delicate patterns because of the fine mesh in the open areas and the backing is somewhat sticky so it prevents the mediums you use to seep underneath. These can be used on fabric too, for an upscale look on upholstered pieces, textiles and walls.

This table/ lamp combo started off in bad shape. Lori decided to recycle it with fresh paint, a new shade and added patterns using the Stick and Style Stencil Roll, Casa Blanca. Look how different it looks now!

This room began with mixed matched furniture and look at how a fresh coat of paint on these pieces gave them a new life. All of the furniture was painted in soft neutrals to tie everything in together. This allows you to use what you have and completely transform them with paint-so easy and economical too. Doesn’t everything look great?
