Re·Design with Prima®

Decoupage 101

If you have never tried to decoupage before, never fear! It is actually pretty easy.

  • Decoupage paper
  • Decoupage gel
  • scissors or craft knife
  • paint brush or sponge brush

Redesign with Prima has a few different kinds of decoupage paper to choose from, each with its own pros and cons. Click here to learn about the different kinds of decoupage paper.

Choose the item you’ll decoupage. An easy way to get started if you are a complete beginner is to choose something that has a straight flat surface. A storage box, the inside or side of dresser drawers, the top of a table are all excellent choices as an easy starter project. As you gain more confidence you’ll start seeing all the possibilities. As long as you have the right glue for the surface you can decoupage it!

You’ll want to prep your surface. If there is old paint or rough uneven surfaces you’ll want to take the time to sand. A light sanding is also a good idea if your surface is smooth or slick like metal or glass. This light scuffing gives the glue something to hold on to. Then wipe your surface with a damp cloth making sure it is clean and dry.

If the decoupage paper design you have chosen is light then the color of the furniture can shine through. You may want to paint your piece in a complementary base color. Take a look at the photos below. The same Decoupage Paper but five completely unique results.

Redesign Decoupage Gel comes in Matte or Shine and works on most surfaces such as wood, glass, metal, or plastic. Decide that type of finish you’ll want and spread a layer of decoupage gel down with either a sponge brush or paintbrush. A paintbrush may leave lines but if you would like a smoother look then a sponge brush is a better alternative.

Cut your design down to size and lay the paper down doing your best to carefully place it in the exact spot you want. Use a flat tool, such as a card or transfer stick to gently smooth out any wrinkles or bubbles.

Then apply a layer of Decoupage Gel on top of the design making sure to cover all of it. Apply 1 to 3 more layers of Gel until you get to your desired finish.

And there you have it, a beautiful decoupaged work of art!
